Leadership Development in Action

Leadership Inspirations believes that leadership development is a life-long learning process. We love working with students because of their energy and passion in the pursuit of becoming successful, empowering leaders of the future. One of the most rewarding things about the work that we do is seeing what these aspiring leaders achieve! Celina Avalos is one of those students who we’ve been fortunate to stay connected to over the years and are inspired to share her leadership journey today:

The summer before senior year began, I found myself having to choose between two camps: one for advocacy and the other for leadership. Not knowing what to expect, but ready to try something new, I chose Leadership Academy. What I thought was just going to be four days of fun with my best friends, turned out to be one of the most crucial experiences I would ever encounter. Through this, I learned three valuable life lessons that I continue to live by to this day:

1) You are not born a leader. Commitment, passion and understanding leads you to discover the kind of leader you’re meant to be.

2) The people around you bring in new ideas and values. No matter how different we may be from each other, our differences make us who we are. I was able to explore my individual strengths and opportunities for growth while tackling topics with my peers like group dynamics, inclusion and involvement, project planning, and teambuilding.

3) Whether you learn that you’re a blue AND an orange [personality temperaments], that you somehow love leading ice-breakers, or that you can make great posters in under 10 minutes, there is ALWAYS something new to learn about yourself.

These three lessons not only became a part of me – they began to pave the way into the person I am endlessly becoming. After I graduated, I kept in contact with the organization and was able to work with them as a Junior Coach then Assistant Coach. What I learned as a student continued to help me grow in my new role. It gave me the opportunity to learn, lead, and serve with a passion. I was not only INSPIRED – I came to believe that no matter how small an act may be; I CAN make a difference.

How do you strive to make a difference as a leader?
