Good News Still Exists

These days perhaps more than ever we’re found searching for good news. I’ve been hoping that sort of positive, uplifting energy could ease my feelings of uncertainty and restlessness — and turns out it works! While we may be physically apart, there is no shortage of people stepping up. From the simplest gestures to grand acts of service, people are perhaps becoming more selfless than ever.

On a walk around my neighborhood, all of the little things people were doing began to catch my eye. People were waving at one another as an act of solidarity, there was chalk on the sidewalks sharing words of inspiration, and free books on driveways for people to take. As I noticed all of these, I found myself feeling a sense of gratitude and ease. Even in the hardest of times, there are unprecedented levels of kindness in our neighborhoods, our community, and around the globe.

As I have been on my own search for goodness, it turns out I am not alone! People are more eager than ever to see the ways that others are stepping up. According to a New York Times article, in the past month of quarantine, there has been a dramatically considerable uptick in positive news interest. The article also noted that Upworthy, an account dedicated to positive storytelling, saw a 65 percent growth in followers on Instagram and a 47 percent increase in on-site page views in March. Even in our toughest times, good news serves as a source of inspiration.

Here are a few of the favorite stories I have seen, but if you look for more, I assure you, you will find no shortage of good news out there.

  • One World: Together at Home – On April 18th, Lady Gaga organized a tribute concert. Celebrities and artists shared stories of kindness, and artists performed from their homes. Global Citizens broadcasted the special across the globe. While, according to a CNN article, the program raised $127 million for the World Health Organization, their primary goal was not money. It was simply to thank those on the front lines and share joy and gratitude across the world.
  • John Krasinki’s Virtual Prom – High school students across the nation have missed their school dances this spring. On April 17, John Krasinski hosted a virtual prom featuring Billie Eilish and the Jonas Brothers. Our Leadership Inspirations team got a little excited in preparation. Check-out our video!
  • Health care professionals going above and beyond – Those on the frontlines have shown no shortage of heroic efforts. Some are even taking it a step further and putting pictures of themselves in their protective equipment, with hopes that their face and smile can help comfort patients. Check out this post from one health care professional.
  • A decrease in pollution – Mother nature has seen incredible benefits from the pandemic as pollution levels have substantially decreased. For the first time in decades, people in the Punjab region of India can see the Himalayas, according to this article.
  • Companies giving back – From donations to discounts and acts of service, companies and corporations are stepping up to show their solidarity and support. Forbes shares 50 Ways Companies Are Giving Back During the Corona Pandemic.

If you’re like me and occasionally have those feelings of helplessness, rest assured that you can make a difference. Not every act of good will make headlines, but think about the ways you can make someone else’s day a little brighter.

*Leadership Lesson*

Here are some simple, easy ways we challenge you to spread good in the world today!

  • Wave or smile at strangers (from a distance of course!) – a simple form of acknowledgment and human connection can go a long way these days.
  • Thank someone – write a note thanking your mail and delivery teams and tape it to your door, email your teacher thanking them for continuing to support your classroom, or simply thank your family for support.
  • Pledge to stay home – Share who you are staying home for and take the Global Citizens Together at Home Pledge.
