Hispanic Heritage Month

The richness of the Hispanic community is vast. Each and every flag, representing a different Hispanic country, comes with its own pride and history! Regardless of the differences, the one commonality that every Hispanic country holds dear to them is that of community.

Hispanic Heritage month provides me a gentle reminder to reflect back on my Latin community. So many memories flood my mind that rejuvenate nostalgia of my family growing up together. Memories of how the holidays were never quiet! That scent of a fresh brewed pot of coffee that transports me back to late night gossip sessions where all the adults would gather with a cup of joe and eat bread until 4am. Not to mention all the memories of being overstuffed and sprawled out on the couches after eating the never ending mountains of food. It is plain and simple, spending time together was of immense value growing up in our family. Whether people wanted to be there or not, everyone had to show up as a form of respect and acknowledgment of the family. There was never a weekend that we spent without my cousins, aunts and uncles,  and extended family! This was our community!

Taking the time to congregate to build community is what I believe the Hispanic population does so well and so effortlessly. Family and community are interchangeable in the Hispanic culture. Your community is your family, and in turn we take care of each other as such. Speaking for myself, I gained an appreciation for my community once I reached college. I realized that even when I pushed away from my heritage, a lot of the relationship building I was shown carried over with me into my personal life. The way I built my own community in college mirrors that of how my parents kept an open door policy with family and friends years before. It is humbling to reflect back on because I have rediscovered the value of why the Latino community can be so powerful as a Hispanic American. Realizing that through sacrifice and grit, our elders rooted their lives in the United States to provide opportunities unimaginable in their native lands.

So let’s all take a brief pause to appreciate our Hispanic family! Doesn’t matter what Hispanic flag you fall under because together we are building a powerful interconnected community rooted in music, food, liveliness, and the love of life! I invite everyone to use this month as a starting place to ask questions and learn more about our amazing communities near and far…I promise you won’t regret it!
